In 2027, the Department of Marine Resources is expected to require rockweed harvesters to review educational materials and pass an online test, following new legislation passed in March 2026 (S.P. 803 – L.D. 1991). This will be a positive step to promote more consistent harvesting practices. The new requirement was discussed at the May 13, 2026, meeting of the DMR’s Seaweed Fishery Advisory Council.
